Cinco de Mayo - also known as an excuse to drink and party (disclaimer: that is my perception based on what locals have told me) - came and went with me staying sober.
Cinco de Mayo - The Fifth of May - is a holiday that commemorates the victory of the Mexicans over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. (reference: http://www.cincy-cinco.com/cincodemayo/Cinco-de-mayo-history.htm). This year, Cathy and I celebrated by going to the Riverbend Music Center to take in the local Latino culture exposition, and of course, the delicious Mexican food.
We were in the merry company of Hubert, Claudia, and Faye. Hubert and I belong to an organization of non-American IT managers in our company. We also used to work in the same group before he moved on to another assignment where we remained in touch. He had moved to the US a while back (he is German but has lived all over) and we have not gotten together since I started this assignment two years ago. Needless to say, it was high time we met each other's families and spent time outside the work setting.
We spent the day checking out the booths and filling our bag with freebies. We also filled up on free food and drink offering, which complemented our lunch of tamales and empanada. All this while enjoying some live Latino music and dance.
Overall, a good way to celebrate a holiday I barely knew about!
